Choosing the right PLC splitter for your installation
The choice depends on the number of outputs, the connector and the enclosure format.

1Which splitter ratio should I choose for my installation?
Work out your optical budget (OLT power – ONT sensitivity – cable losses) and check that the splitter loss fits within it:
- 1:2 (~3.5 dB): testing, dual service
- 1:4 (~7 dB): small building, SMB
- 1:8 (~10.5 dB): medium building, campus
- 1:16 (~13.5 dB): dense FTTH
- 1:32 (~17 dB): very dense PON network — check the margin
2What is the difference between PLC and FBT?
PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) offers better uniformity between outputs and supports more outputs (up to 1:64). FBT (Fused Biconical Taper) is simpler and cheaper for low ratios (1:2, 1:4) but less uniform beyond 1:8. Elfcam exclusively uses PLC 2.0 technology.
3ABS, LGX or FTTH enclosure: which format?

4Do splitters need a power supply?
No. PLC splitters are 100% passive components — no electrical power, no maintenance, no active point of failure. The signal is divided by the optical waveguide.
5What is uniformity and why does it matter?
Uniformity measures the power difference between the strongest and weakest output. Elfcam guarantees < 1 dB — every subscriber receives essentially the same optical power. Critical for FTTH networks where every dB counts.
6SC/APC, SC/UPC or LC/APC: which connector?
- SC/APC: French FTTH standard (carrier network, PTO, fibre box)
- SC/UPC: standard digital links, data centres
- LC/APC: modern high-density networks, SFP switches
7Can I cascade multiple splitters?
Yes, but each splitter adds its own loss. For example, a 1:4 followed by a 1:8 = 1:32 in total, but with ~17.5 dB of cumulative loss. Always check your total optical budget before cascading.
